Reese Witherspoon has joked that she hopes people will “accept her for who she is” after it appeared she had three legs on the cover of Vanity Fair.

The special edition magazine cover shows Witherspoon sitting alongside Oprah Winfrey with her legs crossed over, seemingly with an extra limb.

Another image appears to show Winfrey with three hands - one on her hip, one on her lap and another around Witherspoon’s waist.

The slip-ups prompted some fans to poke fun on social media, with Witherspoon even joining in on the joke.

Leggy: the offending image which appears to depict Reese Witherspoon with three legs

She tweeted: “Well...I guess everybody knows now...I have 3 legs.

“I hope you can still accept me for who I am. ( and I will never apologize for snuggling @Oprah .. if you get the opportunity, I highly recommend it;).”

The talk show host responded to Ms Witherspoon’s tweet by also making fun of the situation.

Winfrey replied: “I accept your third leg. As I know you accept my third hand.”

Vanity Fair tweeted a response, saying Witherspoon’s third leg was the lining of her dress and adding: “As for @Oprah, how can we expect her to juggle it all with just two hands? (We are correcting this erroronline).”

A Twitter user called Zoe credited Reese’s third leg for her success.

“How does Reese Witherspoon get so much done all at once? She produces and stars in movies and TV shows, owns a fashion line, and helps organize the Time’s Up movement all at the same time? Well, it’s probably because she has three legs,” she wrote.

Oprah's three hands were spotted and circled by Twitter users

While Yair Rosenberg commented: “Now that Oprah has been exposed as an alien with three hands, her prospective presidential candidacy takes on more sinister overtones.”

Witherspoon and Winfrey were among a number of A-list stars, who posed for Annie Leibovitz for the magazine’s 24th annual Hollywood issue.

The Crown star Claire Foy appears alongside big screen heavyweights including Nicole Kidman, Robert De Niro, Zendaya, Jessica Chastain, Michael Shannon, Gal Gadot and Harrison Ford on the US magazine’s annual fold-out cover.

James Franco was removed from the cover after he was accused of sexual misconduct.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor, 39, sat for the photoshoot and was interviewed for the special edition.

But it says Franco was removed digitally before publication, quoting a magazine spokesman as saying: “We made a decision not to include James Franco on the Hollywood cover once we learned of the misconduct allegations against him.”

The Disaster Artist actor was accused of sexual misconduct, in a report in the Los Angeles Times, by five women.

He has denied allegations against him, calling them “not accurate”.

The 2018 Hollywood issue of Vanity Fair is out on February 2.
