Olivia Colman said she was mortified after “doing a Gwynnie” by giving a tearful acceptance speech at the Bafta television awards.

She wept as she collected the best actress award for her role in the hit murder mystery Broadchurch, which also won best drama series and best supporting actor for David Bradley.

Colman, 40, compared herself to Gwyneth Paltrow, pictured below, who was mocked after crying throughout her speech when she won an Oscar for Shakespeare In Love in 1999.

After last night’s ceremony at the Theatre Royal, Colman told the Standard: “I can’t believe I did a Gwynnie. I’m so embarrassed and mortified — what must people have thought? I can’t believe I did it.

“I wasn’t expecting to win so I didn’t prepare anything, which I should have, and I think I just totally embarrassed myself.”

Colman, who won two Baftas at last year’s awards, joined her fellow winners at a dinner and after-party at the Grosvenor House hotel.

Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly — better known as Ant and Dec — were the other big winners. They picked up two awards, one for best entertainment show and one for entertainment performance for Saturday Night Takeaway.

The pair said they would never stop going out near their homes in Chiswick — despite McPartlin twice being attacked in pubs in the area, most recently in March. He said: “Brawls in pubs in Chiswick — they are very rare. We’re not going to stop going to the pub.”

Cilla Black won the special award, putting her success down to “only ever being myself”. The 70-year-old, who will be played by Sheridan Smith in an upcoming drama about her life for ITV, said she gave Smith her blessing after they went for dinner at Le Caprice.

She added: “She came to my flat, and we exchanged numbers. I said, ‘If there’s anything that you fall down on or are not sure about, call me’.

“But she didn’t phone me, which is a good thing. I know she was confident. She was lovely.”

Smith later told the Standard: “I’ve got Cilla Black’s number — how cool is that? I should have called her really.” The 32-year-old was sporting cropped purple hair, which she said was for a role to be announced in a few weeks.

Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul, who picked up the drama’s award for best international programme, proved to be the biggest attraction at the after-party. Guests queued up to take selfies with the 34-year-old, who said he would love to appear on the West End stage. He told the Standard: “Oh my God — are you kidding me? I would love that. Since I’ve been here I’ve been going every night to The Drowned Man [at the National Theatre] and it’s the greatest theatre production I’ve ever seen. So hopefully, something with [the show’s company] Punchdrunk.”
