Tom Hiddleston says he has been fighting to “hold on to reality” during his rapid ascent to Hollywood stardom and accepts there will always be interest in his private life.

The actor faced being chased by paparazzi during his relationship with Taylor Swift last year and said he is now content with focusing on his career. “It never feels like what it looks like from the outside” he added.

“The only thing I care about is the work — that’s what I’ve dedicated myself to. In the end, that’s the only thing that has any impact. I’m honoured if it’s meant anything to anyone.”

It is just five years since Hiddleston, 36, won the Bafta rising star award and he has gone on to acclaimed roles in The Night Manager, High-Rise and the Marvel films.

This week he won the hero gong at the Three Empire Awards in Camden. Hiddleston, who will voice the main character in forthcoming prehistoric British animation Early Man, said of coverage of his private life:

“Anyone in the public eye becomes vulnerable to projections. People will say good and bad things. Many are not true. So you just hold on to reality. I do that through my family and my friends.”
