Strictly Come Dancing champion Stacey Dooley lost her glitterball trophy hours after lifting it on winning the BBC ballroom show.

The BBC Three journalist, who waltzed to victory with Kevin Clifton , was sent into a panic after the show’s wrap party last weekend when she misplaced the prize.

Speaking on the Telegraph’s Talking Strictly podcast, Dr Ranj admitted that he took a sneaky photo with the glitterball but was left worried he’d had too much to drink when Dooley was looking for it the next day.

He said: “Here's a little secret… so after the after party, I may have snuck a picture with Stacey's trophy.

"Then there was a message on the WhatsApp group yesterday saying, 'Has anyone seen my trophy? I left it in the room with all the bags and now I can't find it’.”

The A&E doctor then joked that he questioned how many drinks he had had, before denying that he had accidentally left it in the cab.

Dooley eventually found the trophy, with Dr Ranj – who danced with Janette Manrara – saying that it was “put away for safe keeping”.

Dooley, 31, now has a mini glitterball to keep with her after her series 16 win, which was the first time Clifton had lifted the trophy despite being in four finals previously.

The journalist became a household name on the popular BBC show, but was familiar to documentary fans already for her hard-hitting travels around the world tackling issues such as child labour and sex trafficking.

The dancing duo will take charge of the annual concert which will this year feature music from Madness, before and after the London firework display.
