Sir Elton John has revealed having children was his greatest achievement.

The legendary singer, 69 – who has two children, Zachary and Elijah with his husband David Furnish – said becoming a parent was the best thing he ever did.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, he said: “Having children, they are wonderful, they are the light of our lives and it's the best thing we ever did.”

John was on the show to discuss his headline gig at Apple Music Festival at London’s Roundhouse which will also see performances by Britney Spears, Calvin Harris and Michael Buble.

The Candle in the Wind singer praised his fellow artists but said he was not inspired by them.

"No, but I listen to their records," he said. "It's a very diverse bill and that is what Apple Festival is about and that is what it should be about. Diversity."

"It's all about the songs really. That keeps you in the forefront."

John will turn 70 on March 25, 2017, and said despite his age his voice is getting better.

“My voice I think is getting better as I get older. I'm going to be 70 next year but I think I'm singing better than I’ve ever done, I have a wonderful band and I love playing… of course my records don't sell anymore because people have enough Elton John records in their collection, I love making them but it's someone else's turn now.”

Speaking about his plans to celebrate the milestone birthday he said he is keen for his party to double-up as a charity event.

“I'm 70 in March, it's our 50th anniversary of Bernie [Taupin] and I writing songs together and it's the 25th anniversary of the Aids Foundation so I'm going to be in Los Angeles,” he said.

“I don't know what we're going to do yet but I'd like to do something for charity on the night.”
