Russell Crowe looked into joining the Church of Scientology after spending time with fellow A-lister Tom Cruise.

The Oscar-winning actor has admitted that while he discussed the ‘religion’ with the actor, Cruise did not force his beliefs on him.

Speaking to People Magazine, he said: “'From a young kid, I was quite interested in religion.

“When I met Tom, when he was married to Nicole [Kidman], we were spending a bit of time together so I thought I'd find out a little bit about what he was into.”

He added: “I brought it up with Tom and I thought he was really cool. He didn’t try to sell me a pair of shoes.

“He just said, ‘If it’s something that interests you, you’ll pursue it.’ And I think that happens with any kind of religion if you come to it by your own discovery.”

While Crowe admits that he did do some research into the religion by watching videos, he ultimately decided against it.

The star said: “I never ended up putting my two cents down on anybody’s table. I’ve never graced [Scientology’s] doorway.”

A number of high profile actors are members of the Church, including John Travolta, Beck, Elisabeth Moss, Kirstie Allie and Juliette Lewis.

Going Clear, an HBO documentary about Scientology, was recently slammed by the Church and its famous followers.

Travolta told the Tampa Bay Times: “I've been so happy with my experience in the last 40 years...that I really don't have anything to say that would shed light on (a documentary) so decidedly negative.”
