Rising star Shura says online music sharing has made it more difficult for young artists to hone their skills before being spotted.

The singer-songwriter and producer has released two singles, Touch and Just Once, which have been praised by Chloë Grace Moretz and Jessie Ware and been listened to by millions online. Shura, pictured, whose full name is Aleksandra Denton, said she is glad she waited to release her songs.

“I think it’s much harder now with the internet to hone anything,” she told the Standard. “It’s easy to share things, you do one track and it goes on Hype Machine, people are being exposed a lot earlier. I’m 23 and if I wanted to release a record when I was 17 I could have released a record but I'm really glad I didn’t.

“Whilst the internet is amazing, someone with a laptop can make something amazing and send it out but you grow up creatively in a very public way ... I released Touch [which has had more than seven million YouTube views] and thought maybe 4,000 people would watch it in a year.”

Apart from a few festivals, including Sónar Stockholm last month, Shura is spending much of her time at home in Shepherd’s Bush working on her debut album.
