Rihanna said she is “honoured” to be the recipient of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards.

The 28-year-old singer has been recognised for her "decade-long impact on music, pop culture, fashion, film and philanthropy".

She celebrated the news on Twittter where she posted a picture of herself alongside the caption: “Honored to take the #VMAs stage as your video #VANGUARD award recipient LIVE from NYC on August 28!”

In a statement MTV said: "Rihanna's unparalleled output of hits have spawned some of today's most memorable music videos from Umbrella to We Found Love, Diamonds and her most recent collaboration with Drake on Work.

The Barbadian singer will follow in the footsteps of previous winners including David Bowie, Kanye West, Beyonce, George Michael, Guns N' Roses, Justin Timberlake and Duran Duran.

Rihanna – who will perform at the musical bash – has also bagged four nominations.

She is up for Best Female Video for her Drake collaboration, Work, and Best Male Video for her part in Calvin Harris' This Is What You Came For.

The songs have also earned her two nominations in the Best Collaboration category.

Beyonce is leading the pack with 11 nominations while record-breaker Adele received eight. US pop superstar Taylor Swift failed to get a nod.

The news comes a day after the Umbrella singer's role in the all-female Oceans 8 was confirmed.
