Richard Hammond has sparked outrage after describing ice cream as food for gay people in an episode of The Grand Tour.

He made the claim on the latest edition of the show, which he co-hosts with fellow ex-Top Gear presenters Jeremy Clarkson and James May.

Mr Hammond was responding to a remark by Mr Clarkson that you would not be able to eat a Magnum in a Rolls Royce.

“It’s alright, I don’t eat ice cream,” Mr Hammond said.

“It’s something to do with being straight.”

Members of the audience laughed and applauded the comments while his co-stars looked bemused.

“Why are you applauding him?” asked Mr Clarkson. “You’re saying all children are homosexual?”

Mr Hammond went on: “Ice cream is a bit… you know.

“There’s nothing wrong with it, but a grown man eating an ice cream – it’s that way, rather than that way.”

The stars then went on to make a joke about the chocolate flake in a 99 ice cream.

His comments were met with mockery and outright anger on social media.

Years & Years singer Olly Alexander tweeted: “Excuse me while I gag on my Cornetto.

Neil Milan wrote: “When even Jeremy Clarkson finds your bigotry baffling you know you’re an idiotic p****.

“Homophobia on a show about cars, the most classic white elephant of pathetic threatened masculinity, is so f****** tragic.”

Technically Ron tweeted: “Hello I have been eating ice cream for years and I’m still heterosexual. What am I doing wrong? Please help.”

Nicholas Pegg wrote: “Apparently we get all the ice cream. Fine by me. Oh, and don't worry, Hammond. No gay man fancies you, you stupid, terrified little p****.”

And Spigon Ruxide said: “Someone tell Richard Hammond that if he finds himself wanting to s*** men whenever he eats icecream it's proooobably not the icecream.”
