Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington is “over the moon” at the birth of her first child.

Adlington, 26, and her husband Harry Needs welcomed their baby daughter this morning.

The double Olympic gold medallist - who first announced the news that she was expecting in December - took to Twitter to inform her followers of the new arrival.

She posted: “.@harryneeds and I are over the moon as we welcomed our beautiful baby girl this morning. She's doing well and we're so in love!!!”

Congratulatory messages soon came flooding in with Sir Chris Hoy posting: "many congratulations! Can't wait to meet her!"

Fellow Team GB swimmer Michael Gunning tweeted his best wishes, writing "Congratulations @BeckAdlington & @harryneeds So so happy for you both!! Can't wait to meet the new addition to your wonderful family!" followed by a string of baby and celebratory emojis.

Former swimming star Sharron Davies also tweeted: "Huge congrats guys, welcome to the world little swimmer girl."

Earlier this year Adlington said that she was planning on a speedy return to work following the birth of her child.

Speaking to the MailOnline she said: "Women have been having babies for millions of years so there's no need to wrap yourself in cotton wool. I'm due on June 4 and the World Swimming Championships are in early August, so I'd love to be ready to work by then."
