Poldark will go head-to-head with The Great British Bake Off at this year’s TV Baftas.

The two smash hit television programmes have been shortlisted for the Radio Times audience award, the only prize voted for by the general public.

Other shows in the running include Doctor Foster, Humans, Peter Kay’s Car Share and Making a Murderer.

While Poldark has been a firm fan favourite, Doctor Foster picked up a number of National Television Awards earlier this year.

Making a Murderer, which became a global phenomenon when is was released on Netflix last year, is the only US show on the list.

Announced on Tuesday, the six shortlisted shows have been complied by a panel of entertainment and media journalists.

“This shortlist is truly six of the best - six great but very different shows which all captured the public imagination and got the nation talking,” said Radio Times editor Ben Preston.

Amanda Berry, chief Executive of Bafta, said: "The six shortlisted programmes showcase truly entertaining and captivating television from last year.

"Every programme that made the list caught the public's attention and created conversation over the past year, which makes this a tough but exciting decision to make and I'm looking forward to finding out who the winner will be."

The rest of this year’s Bafta TV Awards nominees will be announced on Wednesday morning.

This year’s ceremony will be held at the Royal Festival Hall on May 8.
