Parks and Recreation writer Harris Wittels was found dead from a suspected drug overdose at his home in Los Angeles on Thursday.

The 30-year-old was found by his assistant and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wittels was a writer and executive producer on the show and made the occasional appearance.

The news comes a few days before the season seven finale of the NBC comedy.

Star of the show Amy Poehler paid tribute to the late writer during unite4humanity - a Variety magazine event.

She said: "Today, I lost a friend. I lost a dear, young friend in my life who was struggling with addiction.

“I’m sharing it with you because life and death live so close together, and we walk that fine line everyday.

"So, I don’t really feel like telling any jokes. I’m kind of sad, and it’s really great to be here tonight and listen to all of you, and listen to the great work that you do and be reminded why we live in this bizarre planet called ‘Hollywood.’ It’s very strange.”

Wittels had spoken of his battle with drug addiction in the past and attended a rehabilitation clinic for drug abuse.

As well as Parks and Recreation he was famous for popularising the term "humblebrag" with his Twitter account of the same name.

It was later transformed into the book, Humblebrag: The Art Of False Modesty.
