Thousands of fans have signed a petition calling for Paloma Faith to be scrapped from ITV’s coverage of the Rugby World Cup.

Faith, 34, recorded the official theme song for this year's tournament, but was met with criticism.

The online petition titled 'Petition to remove Paloma Faith from the Rugby World Cup' was launched by an angry viewer on change.org.

The description reads: “Already sick of Paloma Faith's awful rendition of ‘World In Union’? Worried that it might ruin your Rugby World Cup? Then sign this petition and let ITV know your thoughts!”

Addressed to ITV, the petition calls on the broadcaster to remove the song.

“We, the undersigned, request that you, ITV, remove Paloma Faith from the Rugby World Cup in order to make it a more enjoyable experience for all spectators,” the petition states.

Fans took to Twitter to voice their dislike of Faith’s rendition as the tournament kicked off last week.

Some said she “absolutely murdered” the song while another user said every time she heard the song she would "die a little more inside".

Speaking to BBC Newsbeat about the response, new Voice coach Faith said: "Some people are slating it, I feel like they don't like change, but I don't mind.

"I think they don't like it because it's being played too much."

Faith’s song features on the official album for the Rugby World Cup 2015 which contains Swing Low Sweet Chariot by Ella Eyre and tracks by Tom Jones and Only Men Aloud.
