One Direction are moving away from their teen pop image and trying out a more edgy sound.

The band – made up of Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik and Niall Horan – cemented their fame as a pop boyband, but four years on they are looking to try something new.

In an interview with American morning show Today Niall said: “I think it's gonna be a little bit more edgy, but obviously, we feel like we've got some really good songs and we're happy.”

The boys - who have proved themselves as songwriters after penning tracks on their 2013 album Midnight Memories – have written even more tracks for the new album.

Twenty year old Liam – who ventured solo to record tracks with Happy singer Pharrell Williams- said: “We've had more of a hand in writing this time around, and we've literally written every song.”

Despite their many tours and new found celeb status the boys said that they still find it hard to fathom their success since rising to fame on Simon Cowell’s The X Factor in 2010.

It's their army of adoring fans or ‘directioners’ that ease the pressure when on tour with their constant outpouring of admiration for the heart throbs.

Niall revealed: 'We have moments, especially on this tour, where you step out and spend the first 20 minutes just standing and looking at each other and going, "Wow, look where we are!" It's just unbelievable what's happened.'

The boy's success and popularity was further confirmed at this years Teen Choice Awards where they picked up eight prizes.

They are currently on the North American leg of their tour.
