MTV has paid tribute to reality star Clay Adler following his death at the age of 27.

Adler was a cast member on the MTV series Newport Harbor: The Real Orange County, which ran from 2007 to 2008.

TMZ reported that Adler had shot himself while in the desert with friends on March 25.

His father Frank told People magazine his son had died in hospital the next day and his death was an apparent suicide.

In a statement, MTV said: "We are saddened by the news of Clay Adler's passing.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this time."

Newport Harbor: The Real Orange County followed the lives of several teenagers living in the affluent seaside community in California.

Adler's acting credits included appearances on sport drama series Make It Or Break It and TV movie The Fish Tank.
