Miley Cyrus has revealed that she has suffered depression, and even once needed to be rescued by her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, after she locked herself in her room.

The Wrecking Ball singer, whose dog Floyd passed away last week, told of how the illness began after the insecurity she felt about her appearance.

In an interview with Elle she said: “I went through a time when I was really depressed. I locked myself in my room and my dad had to break the door down.

“It was a lot to do with... I had really bad skin and I felt really bullied because of that. But I never was depressed because of the way someone else made me feel. I just was depressed.”

However further on in the interview she told of how her experience with depression inspires her to set an example to her fans: “They know that I’ve struggled with depression and that helped them get over theirs. That gives me a big purpose – a reason to wake up in the morning that’s bigger than to put on my feathers and my little outfits.”

Earlier this week the 21-year-old ex-Disney star had to cancel a show on her tour after she came down with the flu.
