Mel C has been branded a “hypocrite” for posting a topless selfie after criticising Little Mix for being too provocative.

The singer – real name Melanie Chisholm – shared a picture of herself posing in a pair of knickers on Instagram.

She captioned the image: “Cheeky little cover shoot tomorrow.

“Better get my work pants ready! #behindthescenes #versionofme #putsomeclothesonwoman.”

The post sparked a backlash as users reminded her of her comments about not allowing her daughter to follow Little Mix because they have become too sexualised.

One user posted: “Hypocrisy at its finest. People thought that the Spice Girls were also overly sexual at one time and now she posts a pic of herself basically naked. Maybe she needs the publicity.”

Another commented: “Pretty sure you were quick to criticize little mix on their 'provocative' outfits and sexualisation and here you are with nothing but your pants on?? Pot kettle black springs to mind.... @littlemix.”

A third wrote: “Didn't you say in an interview on The Pool a few weeks back that you don't know why women get their kit off in the name of 'girl power' and you couldn't get your 'bits and bobs out in public' as you wouldn't find it 'empowering'. Hypocritical much?”

The former Spice Girl previously said she thinks it is a “shame” that Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall have felt the need to wear less clothing.

Speaking to the Sunday People she said: “They are getting more provocative. To me, they were kind of the closest thing to the Spice Girls we've seen.

“They are all gorgeous and great singers. But they weren't sexy and it's got more and more that way. I love them – but I just say, ‘Stay you’.

“All young women want to look sexy and hot so I understand it's hard. But I think it's such a shame. We live in a narcissistic age – it's 100 per cent worse than when I was in the Spice Girls. It was a more innocent time.”

Nelson – who recently split from her fiancé Jake Roche – hit back at the comments by posting an Instagram snap of herself in a dress featuring the slogan “too provocative”.
