Model turned actress Cara Delevingne has responded to an awkward interview she took part in on an American breakfast show, saying some people fail to understand sarcasm.

Delevingne, 22, was on Good Morning Sacramento to promote her latest film Paper Towns when one CBS presenter told her she looked “irritated” and encouraged her to “have a nap and get a Red Bull”.

The actress has been travelling the world to promote the new film - and the presenters made sure to pick up on her tiredness.

Despite answering questions, Delevingne was quickly cut off after being told that she seemed more “excited” about the film while being interviewed in London.

Delevingne has now addressed the awkward encounter, explaining that some people are unable to understand British humour.

“Some people just don't understand sarcasm or the British sense of humour,” she tweeted.

The awkward exchange started off on the wrong foot after one presenter mispronounced her name as 'Carla'.

When asked what she thought of the novel by John Greene, on which the film is based, the actress replied sarcastically: “Uh, no I never read the book, or the script. I kind of winged it.”

The presenters then criticised her for appearing tired and disinterested.

Shocked by the abruptness of the interview Delevingne attempted to defend her demeanour by joking that it was “very early” in the morning.

Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams stuck up for Delevingne and took to Twitter to condemn the presenters.

“Good for you @Caradelevingne Ask a lazy question, get a lazy answer,” she tweeted.

Delevingne recently opened up about her move into acting, insisting that it was “no fluke”.

Speaking at the Paper Towns premiere in Manhattan she said: “I work really hard and don’t want anyone to think that this is a fluke or I got this because of my social media presence. If I got this part, I’d like to think it’s on merit.”

Paper Towns hits UK cinemas on August 17.
