Madonna has told fans that 30 years after she first met Sean Penn the actor has revealed that he “finally appreciates” her art.

The Queen of Pop – who was married to Penn for four years – informed her fans of the actor’s change of heart during her Rebel Heart Tour at the Barclays Center.

Sitting on a stool and braced to play the ukulele, Madonna spoke of her ex who had enjoyed her Madison Square Garden concert two nights previous.

"I did a show at Madison Square Garden the other night, you may have heard about it," she said. "And my ex-husband was there! Could you imagine?

"He had been at my show 30 years earlier when I played Madison Square Garden, and he was very upset with me for wearing a costume that was too revealing." She added: "That's not a lie!"

The Vogue singer continued: "Anyway, after the show he wrote me a letter and said he finally appreciated my art. And that is what I have to say about marriage, OK? Thirty f*****g years later."

Penn was spotted smiling up at the stage from the front row as Madonna performed True Blue on September 17. The song was penned while she was married to the Milk actor. The True Blue album notes read: "This is dedicated to my husband, the coolest guy in the universe."

Penn – who recently split from Charlize Theron – also introduced his daughter, model Dylan Penn, to Madonna backstage.

A source told US Weekly: "She had never met Madonna before, but Madonna was really sweet to her. Madonna and Sean have stayed close friends over the years, so of course she embraced Dylan."
