Macaulay Culkin has been hailed as the saviour of 2018 after he reprised his role as cheeky Kevin McCallister for a Home Alone Google ad.

Culkin, 38, returned to the famous house where he tortured hapless crime duo Harry and Marv, aka the Wet Bandits, 28 years ago, after his family forgot to take him on holiday.

The one minute ad sees Culkin recreating famous scenes from the hit festive flick including telling the pizza delivery guy to “keep the change you filthy animal” and setting traps for Harry and Marv.

Culkin tweeted the video alongside the post: “#heygoogle Have you ever wondered what Kevin McCallister is like as an adult? Me neither. But just in case you’re curious you should totally watch this #ad.”

Fans were bowled over by the ad which sparked a flurry of questions including one from a fan who was concerned for Kevin still living with his parents and continuing to be stalked by criminals.

Culkin replied: “He's housesitting for Mom.”

Another fan referenced a scene in which Kevin buys himself a toothbrush, tweeting: “Only thing missing was Kevin asking Google if this toothbrush was approved by the American Dental Association.”

Culkin replied: “We actually shot that bit. Didn't make the final cut I guess.”

Others were super excited Kevin finally got to tuck into the macaroni cheese ready meal after 28 years with one tweeting: “AS A PERSON WHO CRINGES EVERY TIME THEY WATCH THE PART IN HOME ALONE WHERE KEVIN DOESN'T EAT THE MAC AND CHEESE, I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW SATISFYING THIS IS. I MIGHT EVEN BUY A GOOGLE THING CAUSE OF THIS.”

Home Alone is frequently ranked as one of the best Christmas films of all time.

It spawned four sequels including Home Alone 2: Lost in New York which was the last one starring Culkin.

The 1990 original had an all-star cast including Catherine O'Hara and John Heard as Kevin's mother and father and Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern as Harry and Marv. It also starred Kieran Culkin, Macaulay's real-life younger brother, as Kevin's cousin Fuller.
