Chris Hughes has revealed he received ‘abuse and death threats’ for a campaign he fronted to raise awareness around male mental health.

The publicity stunt saw the Love Island star pretend he was launching a bottled water infused with his tears called L’Eau de Chris, for which he was widely mocked.

He revealed a day later that it was all a ruse to launch CALM’s #Don’tBottleItUp campaign which aims to stop men keeping their emotions inside.

Speaking exclusively to Standard Online about the response, he said: “It was unbelievable. I had to deal with threats and abuse. I even had a couple of death threats.

“I just want to help people with mental illness. I like just knowing that I’ve helped people. Men bottle up their emotions and it does kill.”

The reality personality also opened up about his and friend Kem Cetinay’s debut single Little Bit Leave It topping the iTunes chart, saying it was ‘surreal’ to see his name on music channels.

"I never knew that was a big thing. When you see the other people on the list. It hits you,” he said.

“We knew how good it was. It’s a bit of a grime banger. It came on in a club the other day and I lost my head a bit.

I felt like jumping around. I’ve seen my name on music channels. That’s surreal.”
