Lionel Richie has topped the UK album charts just one week after his performance at Glastonbury.

The 66-year-old, who drew the biggest crowd of any performer at this year's festival, has seen his on-stage success translate into record sales.

Greatest hits album Lionel Richie & The Commodores’ The Definitive Collection has jumped a staggering 103 places in just one week, reaching the number one spot this Sunday.

Marking his first UK number one for 23 years, the album originally reached No 10 when it was released back in 2003.

Speaking to OfficialCharts.com, Richie said: "I was overwhelmed performing at Glastonbury in front of all those people and for the fans to make the album No 1 is unbelievable.

"The UK has always been a special place for me, thank you, I love you all."

The All Night Long singer spoke of his excitement following his Glasonbury set when his album sky-rocketed up the charts last week,.

Speaking about the prospect of clinching the top spot, he told the BBC: "When they told me this morning, I was screaming like a kid with his first hit record.”

"I'm trying to be very calm about this, but there's no way you can be calm about this. This is like Christmas."

Richie took to the pyramid stage for the Sunday afternoon legends slot where he belted through a string of hits including Hello and Dancing on the Ceiling.

The music legend wasn't the only artist feeling the Glastonbury effect this week as Florence and the Machine's How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful and James Bay's Chaos and the Calm came in at number two and number three respectively.
