The third Legally Blonde movie is set to have some major talent at its helm.

Mindy Kaling has signed up to pen the third instalment of the popular comedy franchise alongside writer and producer Dan Goor, reports Deadline.

Kaling, 40, is currently enjoying rave reviews for her Netflix series Never Have I Ever, on which she served as co-creator, writer and executive producer.

She also served as co-creator of the 2019 mini-series of Four Weddings and a Funeral, inspired by the film of the same name, and penned the hit movie Late Night.

It is the second project Kaling has teamed up with 45-year-old Goor on, as the pair previously worked together on Kaling and Priyanka Chopra’s upcoming wedding comedy.

Reese Witherspoon committed to reprising her role as Elle Woods in 2018 and she'll produce the movie through her Hello Sunshine production company, which is also behind HBO series Big Little Lies, Apple TV+ drama The Morning Show and the upcoming Little Fires Everywhere.

The Legally Blonde franchise follows sorority girl Elle, who is trying to obtain a degree at Harvard Law School in an attempt to win back her boyfriend – in the process, she overcomes prejudices aimed at the ‘dumb blonde’ stereotype and becomes a successful lawyer.

The classic film also starred Luke Wilson, Selma Blair, Matthew Davis, Victor Garber, Jennifer Coolidge and a Chihuahua named Bruiser.

The huge success of the 2001 movie saw a sequel released in 2003. Titled Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde, the film sees Woods navigate the tricky world of Washington DC as she tries to get an animal rights bill passed. There was also a musical based on the first film released in 2007.

While initially billed for to hit cinemas on Valentine’s Day 2020, there is currently no scheduled release date for Legally Blonde 3.
