Kris Marshall says nothing quite beats filming in London - despite having worked in the Caribbean and Australia.

The actor said it had been “pretty amazing” to shoot his latest project, a romantic comedy, in the capital.

Marshall, 42, stars in BBC crime drama Death In Paradise, which is filmed in Guadeloupe, and is currently in Perth working on A Few Less Men, the sequel to 2011 film A Few Best Men.

In his London project, Sparks And Embers, he plays a man called Tom who meets up with his ex-girlfriend on the South Bank on Christmas Eve just as she is about to move to France with her fiancé.

The independent film is written and directed by Gavin Boyter.

Marshall, who recently moved from London to Bath, said: “We shot it on the South Bank at Christmas over three weeks.

Those views from Hungerford Bridge down South Bank and past the National Theatre, all the way to The Globe and the pedestrian bridge — the views in London are just incredible.

“Filming in London, it’s my home, it has its challenges ... but it’s pretty amazing. I love filming in London, I just haven’t had the chance.”

Marshall remains best known for his role as Colin Frissell in Love Actually 12 years ago. He said: “It’s amazing that was such a long time ago, it’s amazing that in the US and the UK it has become a Christmas staple.

“It’s quite bizarre, you do this thing, it’s just 12 days, 12 years ago. It’s been great for me and everyone else in it I think.”

Marshall is looking forward to spending time with his son at Christmas, saying: “My Christmases are very family-orientated. I haven’t seen my son for seven weeks now, I’ve only seen him for two weeks of the last 14, it’s quite a long time for a three-year-old.

“[I’m looking forward to] Getting home, wearing some nice warm clothes. It’s very Byronic, sitting writing poetry by the fire. I’m looking forward to a bit of cold weather.”

Sparks And Embers opens in cinemas and on demand on December 18.@mirandeee
