Joseph Gordon-Levitt is set to star in the live action remake of popular 80s children’s show Fraggle Rock.

The 500 Days of Summer actor will also produce the film, alongside New Regency and The Henson Co., which has been in the pipe line for over five years.

Fraggle Rock – which followed the lives of the Fraggles, the Doozers and the Gorgs – ran from 1983 to 1987 and was created by the late Jim Henson.

Talking of his new role in the film Gordon-Levitt, 34, told Variety: "The first screen personas I ever loved were Henson creations, first on Sesame Street, and then on Fraggle Rock.

“Jim Henson’s characters make you laugh and sing, but they’re also layered, surprising, and wise. From Oscar the Grouch, to Yoda, to the Fraggles. I’ve never stopped loving his work, even as a young frisky man, and on into adulthood.

“Collaborating with Lisa Henson makes me confident we can do something that Jim would have loved. I’m grateful and excited to be working with New Regency on this project.”

News of the actor's involvement could indicate the announcement of a new director and writers.

It is as yet unclear what role Gordon-Levitt will play.
