Shrek could be set to make a return to the big screen with an all-new reboot.

The last instalment of the internationally-adored animation, Shrek Forever After, was released in 2010.

Despicable Me producer Chris Meledandri is believed to be in talks for a fresh storyline to re-introduce the moody green ogre to new movie audiences.

Meledandri appeared to hint that he doesn’t want to mess with the original star-studded cast which included Mike Myers, as Shrek, Eddie Murphy, as Donkey and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona.

He told Variety: “When you look back on those vocal performances they're awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention.

“I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterisations.

“The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it's not simply yet another film in a series of sequels.”

Illumination Studios founder Meledandri also told the outlet that he has his sights on reviving Puss ‘n’ Boots and even a Super Mario Bros film.

By the time a Shrek reboot comes about Meledandri’s revived version of The Grinch would have already made its big screen debut.

Shrek was originally released in 2001 and earned $484.4 million (£368 million) worldwide. Shrek 2 followed three years later and made $920 million (£699 million) with Shrek the third bagging $799 million (£607 million) in 2007 and Shrek Forever After pocketing $753 million (£572 million) in 2010.
