Henry Cavill has mocked critics who say Clark Kent can't hide his Superman alter ego simply by donning a pair of glasses.

Cavill, 32, walked unnoticed through New York City to prove that Kent’s disguise was definitely good enough to hide his superhero identity.

The actor – who is the current incarnation of the superhero – posed for a series of photographs in New York City wearing the iconic 'S' logo - and no glasses – and still no one recognised him.

In a video posted to his Instagram account the actor can be seen sitting in Times Square, relaxing in a café and standing outside a subway station underneath a huge Batman V Superman billboard.

He captioned the shot: “Dear Doubter, the glasses are good enough. Regards, Superman. #WhoWillWin #Superman”.

One fan deemed him a "legend" for the stunt while another was in disbelief that people failed to spot the actor: "How can you walk the street dressed in that and not being recognised.(Because I wasn't there)."

Another questioned: "How is that possible?"

Cavill has been busy promoting Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and recently attempted to solve the age old question: Who would win in a fight – Batman or Superman?

The actor asked a group of children who defended Batman and told Cavill: “Superman needs to get some upgrades.”

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is set for UK cinema release on March 25.
