US punk band Green Day has tried to ‘send flowers’ to Amy Winehouse by dedicating a song to her on their latest album.

Lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong has admitted that even though they didn’t know her, they wanted to pay tribute somehow.

He said: "Her death was a big loss. I didn't know her but I was a fan of her music.

"She brought the old soul and first wave of ska into a modern era. She was an unbelievable talent, so the song kind of wrote itself."

He describes the song as ‘their way of sending flowers’ to the musician who died last year at age 27 of alcohol poisoning after years of battling with drink and drugs.

The band are set to release a trilogy of albums in the coming months titled, Uno, Dos, and Tres.

The song dedicated to the British star is called ‘Amy’ and is the last track on the second album.

Green Day have also dedicated a song on the third album to a friend of their who committed suicide.

Bassist Mike Drint explained that ‘X-Kid’ is about: “a friend of ours who took an early exit.

"He was a very close friend and he just never grew up. He just lived with his glory days behind him and didn't realise that his glory days were now in front of him. We love him dearly but life happened."
