Gary Numan has cancelled a concert after his tour bus struck and killed an elderly man.

Numan, 60, and his team were making a right turn near the House of Blues venue he was scheduled to perform at in Cleveland when the bus hit the 91-year-old. He died at the scene.

The Cars singer said he has been left “utterly devastated” by the news and that his team are “filled with sadness”.

In a Twitter statement he told fans he decided to cancel his concert as a mark of respect.

“We are all utterly devastated by the fatal accident involving our tour bus earlier today,” he wrote.

“Everyone of us is filled with a sadness that made it impossible to even consider playing our show this evening, and out of respect it would have been entirely wrong.”

He apologised to fans for cancelling, but assured they would be refunded.

He finished: “At the moment all we can think about are the people affected by this terrible tragedy and to them we send all our love.”

The 45-year-old driver was not arrested following the accident but police are continuing to investigate the incident.

Numan is currently touring the US. He recently opened up to the Standard about his set lists, saying he feels “dirty” after playing his old songs, including his 1979 hit, Cars.

“I always feel like I need a shower after that, like I’ve dirtied myself slightly, but it needs to be done because to completely ignore your history is to stick two fingers up at the fans,” he said. “There’s an awkward friction between me and some of them who would like to hear older stuff.”

Numan lives in California with his wife Gemma and their daughters Raven, Persia and Echo.
