Corden, 36 – who was honoured with an OBE by the Queen on the New Year Honours list - was trending on Twitter shortly after the BBC adaptation of the classic had aired on Thursday afternoon.

One user wrote, “Argh why is James Corden narrating Esio Trot, he ruins everything #unimpressed" while another posted: “Great. Esio Trot is narrated by the ubiquitous James Corden. That's latin for 'tiresomely, untalentedly, boringly everywhere'.”

Others were quick to defend the Gavin and Stacey actor, tweeting: "Criticism of James Corden's role as narrator for 'Esio Trot' production with Judi Dench & Dustin Hoffman totally misplaced! He was BRILLIANT."
