Actor Ewan McGregor has thrown his support behind Jeremy Corbyn after the Labour leader confirmed he will not be resigning.

McGregor blasted the Labour “turncoats” as he replied to the statement Corbyn posted in the wake of yesterday's no confidence vote.

The North Islington MP tweeted: “We need Labour party members, trade unionists & MPs to unite behind my leadership at a critical time for our country.”

McGregor replied: “Good for you! The turncoats in your party should be ashamed of themselves. I hope you find the support you deserve.”

Corbyn has suffered a series of dramatic resignations from his shadow cabinet and on Tuesday MPs voted by 172 to 40 in favour of a motion of no confidence in him.

Charlotte Church has also defended the party leader, but others including J. K. Rowling have backed calls for him to resign.

Rowling retweeted a string of posts calling on him to step down and also posted: “I do love 'well-orchestrated coup' as a term of abuse. Most of us are thrilled to see Labour acting so competently. Keep it up.”

Actress Frances Barber has called for Corbyn to resign and branded him an “outrage to the movement of Labour” in a series of tweets.

David Cameron used Prime Minister's Questions to demand Corbyn steps down.

Mr Cameron said: "It might be in my party's interests for him to sit there, it's not in the national interest, and I would say for heaven's sake man, go!"
