Emmy nominations 2016: Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch and Idris Elba up for gongs as Game of Thrones leads the pack

Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch and Idris Elba are among a host of British stars who have received Primetime Emmy nominations.

The actors will go up against some of the biggest names in US television in a bid to scoop the coveted gongs at the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards in September.

Hiddleston was nominated for his portrayal of Jonathan Pine in The Night Manager while Cumberbatch was recognised for his role as Sherlock in the Abominable Snowman and Elba for Luther.

They will face tough competition from Bryan Cranston (All The Way) and Courtney B Vance and Cuba Gooding Jr. for The People v. O.J. Simpson.

Luther and Sherlock were also nominated for TV Movie while The Night Manager is up for Limited Series.

HBO series Game of Thrones earned a leading 23 nominations, including best drama series. Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke and Maisie Williams are all up for Supporting Actress for their characters, while Kit Harington and Peter Dinklage have been nominated for the male equivalent.

Fargo, American Crime and The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story also scooped multiple nominations.

US actors dominated the best actor and actress in a drama series categories with TV favourites Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), Taraji P. Henson (Empire), Claire Danes (Homeland) and Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright of House of Cards fame among the nominees.

Actor Anthony Anderson – who announced the nominees with Gilmore Girls star Lauren Graham – had a freak out as he was nominated for Lead Actor in a Comedy for Black-ish. Other nominees include Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley) and Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent).

Downton Abbey and Maggie Smith were also nominated aswell as fellow Brit James Corden for The Late Late Show.

The awards – which honour the best in US prime time television – will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles on September 18.
