Eminem’s definition of “Stan” has been added to another dictionary.

Stan – which describes a super and sometimes obsessive fan of a celebrity – now has two entries in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, as a noun and a verb.

The “slang and often disparaging” noun is defined as “an extremely or excessively enthusiastic and devoted fan,” while the verb adds, “to exhibit fandom to an extreme or excessive degree”.

The entries mark the second time “Stan” has been added to a widely-used and official dictionary, with the word making the Oxford English Dictionary in 2017.

It was made famous by Eminem's 2000 hit song Stan, which also features Dido and sees Eminem rap about a fictitious crazed fan who writes him letters that go unanswered.

Later in the track, he realises “Stan” is the guy in the news who killed himself by driving his car into the river while his pregnant girlfriend was tied up in the boot.

“Stan” was one of more than 640 new words added to the dictionary this month, with revisions including new meanings for old words like “snowflake”.

The acronym “EGOT” was added to the dictionary’s website, officially defining the smash-hit success of stars who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony award.

Only 15 talented souls have achieved the prestigious status including Whoopi Goldberg, Andrew Lloyd Webber and, most recently, John Legend.
