Elvis Presley is on track to make UK chart history almost 40 years after his death.

His new posthumous album, The Wonder of You – the second collection of orchestral re-workings of Presley’s hits with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra – is heading for this week’s number 1 spot on the Official Albums Chart.

Presley would take his tally to 13, making him the solo star with the most UK number one albums if he wins this week’s chart battle.

It would also see him break Madonna’s current record of 12.

The Beatles currently hold the record for the most chart-topping albums by a band on the Official Chart, with 15.

The King will face tough competition to clinch the top spot from Michael Bublé, whose ninth studio album Nobody But Me is close behind at Number 2.

Lady Gaga’s Joanne is currently sitting at number 3.

Presley last topped the charts in November 2015 with If I Can Dream which bumped Rod Stewart’s Another Country into second position.

Speaking about her former husband’s album, Priscilla Presley said at the time: "This is an album that Elvis always really wanted to do and he would have been so pleased to know his fans are still there and they continue to love his music.

"The most talented team put this album together and helped us all realise an unfulfilled dream."

Elvis – who died in 1977 – recently took fourth place on Forbes’ highest paid dead celebrities list with an estimated pre-tax income from October 1, 2015 to October 1, 2016 of $27 million (£22.2 million).
