Ed Sheeran has revealed that his new single Don’t is about a difficult break-up with a “singer ex” who cheated on him.

Fans believe the song refers to Burn star Ellie Goulding, with whom he had a fling with last summer.

The Daily Mirror has reported that whilst talking about his new record, the singer-songwriter said: “The story in Don’t is 100% true. I could have gotten nastier – there was more s*** that I didn’t put in.”

Going into more detail, he divulged: “I was seeing someone for a bit, and then they ended up physically involved with one of my friends in the same hotel that we were staying in, while I was downstairs.”

Both Goulding and Sheeran performed at V Festival last summer, which was around the time the pair were linked. It was at the festival that Goulding is said to have shared a kiss with One Direction star Niall Horan, which she initially denied.

Speaking to Billboard magazine on using his love life in his lyrics, Sheeran said: “If you date a songwriter, be prepared to have songs written about you.”
