Ed Sheeran kept the peace between Harry Styles and Taylor Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards.

The former couple were seen together at the MTV Music Awards where Swift appeared to badmouth the One Direction singer. They were joined by Sheeran and party promoter DJ Spiky Phil and the meeting was said to be difficult for all involved.

Swift, 23, is thought to have been seen mouthing "shut the f**k up" as the Best Song Ever quintet were presenting an award. According to Us Magazine, things were "super awkward" later in the evening and the Lego House singer found himself stuck in the middle.

An insider said: "Ed made sure to keep them separate."

It is said that Sheeran had to stay neutral where his mutual friends are concerned, following their split in January after only three months together.

Styles' fellow One Directioners were quick to defend him following Swift's dedication of her Best Female Video trophy for I Knew You Were Trouble to her ex-flame, whom the song concerned.

Liam Payne previously said: "I just thought it was a bit not needed. I mean, you just won an award, it's like, concentrate on yourself ... Hashtag get over it."
