DVD/Video: Narc (Paramount Home Entertainment, 18, £15.99/£12.99)

There's precious little glamour attached to working on the narc squad in downtown Detroit; it's a case of doing all the wrong things for the best of reasons.

Joe Carnahan's edgy, surprisingly realistic thriller examines the paradoxes of this difficult, worthy work through Jason Patric, chucked off the force when an undercover op went wrong, but now reinstated to help Ray Liotta track down his partner's murderer.

The two leads are terrific, and the brutality, noise, jumpy camerawork and gallows humour combine to present a convincing portrait of a dangerous world. With commentary and various docs.
