David Walliams jokes he is joining The X Factor after 'sacking' Simon Cowell

Comedian David Walliams sent fans into a frenzy when he appeared to confirm that he is joining The X Factor.

Walliams, 43, told his one million followers that he has taken the decision to sack Simon Cowell from the ITV talent show for "showing off" too much on Britain's Got Talent.

He also tweeted that he would be taking over as head judge.

Walliams posted: "I can finally confirm I am the new @TheXFactor judge. @SimonCowell will not be returning. Sadly I had to sack him for showing off on @BGT."

Fans were more than keen on the idea of the Britain's Got Talent judge taking to the X Factor panel with one tweeting: "id have you presenting every show on TV if you could your hilarious mwah xxx."

Unfortunately for fans Cowell, 55, confirmed that Walliams will not be joining the show.

Speaking at the Together For Short Lives charity ball he said: "I can confirm that would never never happen."

Cowell is set to shake-up the show ahead of the next series in a bid to win back viewers.

The future of Mel B and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini has not been confirmed and veteran judge Louis Walsh has stepped down from the role.

Walsh, 62, who had been on the panel since the show began, said he wants to focus on his job as a music manager.

Singers Robbie Williams and Rita Ora, DJ Nick Grimshaw and a member of One Direction are among those rumoured to be lined up to replace Walsh.

Dermot O'Leary also announced his departure, with Caroline Flack and Olly Murs set to replace him.
