Coronation Street actor Michael Le Vell 'declared bankrupt'
Coronation Street star Michael Le Vell has reportedly been declared bankrupt, despite his £250,000-a-year pay packet from the Cobbles.
The actor - who plays Kevin Webster in the soap - failed to keep on top of his tax affairs, according to papers The Mirror claims to have seen.
The publication claims that sources have revealed that Le Vell’s outstanding bill was a “six-figure sum”, as HMRC petitioned him in the High Court.
They also reveal that the star was declared bankrupt under his real name Michael Robert Turner earlier this year but a change in details to include his stage name and profession led to the discovery of his identity.
Standard Online have contacted representatives for Le Vell for comment.
It is thought that the father-of-two shelled out £200,000 in legal fees when he was accused of 12 counts of sexual allegations against children.
A jury at Manchester Crown Court found Le Vell not guilty in September 2013 and cleared him.
But Ministry of Justice rules prevent people who can afford their defence from receiving tax-payer funded paybacks after the case closes, meaning Le Vell was left to pay the full amount.
He reportedly also had to sell his £750,000 Cheshire home after his marriage to Janette Beverley collapsed after 25 years.
