Britain's Got Talent winners Collabro today revealed they want to be as big as One Direction as they launched their “dream” bid to make it in America.

The boyband, who won the competition last year, are travelling to the States in July for the launch of their second album, Act Two, as part of a £1 million US record deal with Sony Masterworks.

Collabro, whose debut album Stars was UK No 1 for eight weeks last year, believe their reworking of musical theatre hits and takes on modern pop songs will help them crack America.

Singer Jamie Lambert said: “We are going over there to do a showcase in a few venues in America in July which is really exciting. We are going to New York first. It’s been the dream for a while. We want to take the massive fan base here and take it worldwide.”

Fellow singer Tom Redgrave, 25, added: “We always get compared to a mix of One Direction and Il Divo. We are very similar to both of them and we would very much like to have some of their success.”

The group, who were at The Arts Club in Mayfair to perform songs from Act Two ahead of its UK release on June 1, met friend James Corden at an awards ceremony and hope he will give them a slot on his Late Late Show to boost their profile in the US.

They also defended TV talent shows from allegations they are a tired format. Lambert, 25, said: “They are still the best way to launch an act like ours. Especially because we had all been grafting for so long.”
