Captain Tom Moore may be denied a number one single after his lead over The Weeknd narrowed in the midweek charts update.

The 99-year-old war veteran has become a national treasure during the coronavirus outbreak after raising more than £28 million for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday.

He then released a cover of You’ll Never Walk Alone featuring Michael Ball and it previously seemed as though the pair could be heading for the top spot in the charts.

However, a midweek update from the Official Charts Company reveals The Weeknd is closing the gap between himself and Captain Tom.

Captain Tom and Ball's You'll Never Walk Alone cover currently holds the lead with 60,000 chart sales this week, but The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights is now just over 18,000 chart sales behind, compared to 27,000 behind on Tuesday.

The figures reveal that Captain Tom is leading the way on downloads, while The Weeknd dominates streaming figures.

We'll find out who has bagged the number one spot on Friday.

Since his charity bid went viral, Captain Tom has raised a huge amount of cash and fans - including Piers Morgan - are now calling for him to be knighted.

On Tuesday, the veteran, who fought in World War Two, opened the new Nightingale Hospital in his native Yorkshire, appearing by video link.
