Tickets are now on sale for Mean Girls, the musical adaptation of the hit 2004 film which is coming to London in June 2024.

Its arrival in the West End will coincide with the 20th anniversary of the pop culture classic, which starred Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried.

The well-loved film, written by 30 Rock star Tina Fey, follows outsider Cady Heron who has been raised in Africa and who arrives at an American high school where she must navigate the world of The Plastics – the girls who rule the school.

The film was turned into a hit Broadway show in 2018, and has since embarked on two US tours. Now it is heading to London for its UK premiere, with previews beginning on June 5. Fey said: “We’re so excited to bring Mean Girls to London, where everyone already knows what Regina means.” Mean Girls The Musical has been written by Fey and composed by Jeff Richmond, with lyrics from Nell Benjamin and direction and choreography from Casey Nicholaw.

Producers Lorne Michaels and Sonia Friedman said in a joint statement, “Mean Girls is a timeless comedy that for decades has connected with generations of audiences across the globe.

“Having worked together for several years on this production, we are immensely proud and excited to be bringing this stage musical, led by this incredible writing and creative team, to London’s Savoy Theatre.”

Over the past 20 years, the high school comedy has gained legendary pop culture status: Mean Girls tapped into the psyche of millions of teenagers around the world who sympathised with Lindsay Lohan’s character Cady, who has to quickly work out how to navigate the high school’s often nonsensical rules and social cues. The film was a hit at the box office too, making over $130 million against a $17 million budget.

When the musical adaptation first took the the stage in 2018, the New York Times said, "The jokes, poses and put-downs that Regina delivers and inspires in others in this musical... are a lot more entertaining than the more earnestly aspirational doings of the heroines of Frozen, Anastasia and, their deathless sorority founder, Wicked. That’s because Regina and her frenemies converse in dialogue by the peerless comic writer Tina Fey."
