Brian May paid tribute to Freddie Mercury as Queen were named ‘living Legends’ at the Classic Rock Awards.

The guitarist was on hand to collect the award at the Camden Roundhouse on Wednesday evening on behalf of the iconic band.

He told the audience: “I'm accepting this beautiful award on behalf of John and Roger and on behalf of the incredible and irrepressible Freddie Mercury.

“I know he would have loved to have been here for this.”

May, 68, also thanked US singer Adam Lambert, who has performed with the band during live shows since 2012 and will headline next year's Isle of Wight festival with them.

“We didn't look for a singer. Roger and I thought it was over. Then somewhere out of the blue comes this gift from God, Adam Lambert," he said.

“Because of Adam, we will be able to play next year's Isle Of Wight Festival and I'm very happy about that.”

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Queen’s seminal hit Bohemian Rhapsody, which May claims ‘saved’ the band.

Other winners on the night included Iron Maiden who won Album of the Year for The Book of Souls and We Are Harlot who won Best Band.
