Brad Pitt has hit back at Angelina Jolie’s claim that he has failed to pay “meaningful” child support to the actress amid their bitter split.

Lawyers for the US actor said Pitt has handed over more than $9 million (£7 million) to his estranged wife Jolie since they broke up in 2016.

It comes after Jolie said she wants their divorce finalised before the end of the year after claiming that the actor had failed to support their six children.

Pitt’s attorney said the Hollywood star had paid more than $1.3 million in bills for Jolie and their children since they separated.

He also loaned her $8 million to help her buy her current home, according to court documents filed on Tuesday.

Pitt's attorneys said that Jolie's claims were "a thinly-veiled effort to manipulate media coverage."

Jolie's representatives told the Standard that Pitt's counter-claims were "a blatant attempt to obfuscate the truth."

On Tuesday Jolie’s spokeswoman said her filing was intended to provide closure to the marriage "and allow her and Brad to recommit as devoted co-parents to their children."

Pitt and Jolie were married for two years and enjoyed a 10-year romance that had made the pair one of Hollywood's most glamorous couples.

They have six children for whom she is seeking primary custody.

The actress said that she wanted to expedite the divorce and return to single status by the end of 2018.

Pitt's court filing said it was the Pitt, not Jolie, who first made the request to speed up the divorce.

The divorce filing, citing irreconcilable differences, triggered a bitter custody dispute during which Pitt was investigated and cleared of child abuse.

Final custody arrangements have yet to be agreed.
