Bob Dylan writes ‘speech of thanks’ for Nobel Prize ceremony

Bob Dylan has written a “speech of thanks” to be delivered on his behalf at the Nobel Prize ceremony.

The 75-year-old singer has been honoured with the Nobel Prize for Literature, but declined to accept the prestigious award in person from the ceremony.

Nobel Foundation confirmed on Monday that he has written a speech that will be read out at the lavish banquet in Stockholm's City Hall on December 10.

The academy has yet to reveal who will deliver Dylan's speech.

Dylan was awarded the prize “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”.

The singer-songwriter was branded “impolite and arrogant” by Per Wastberg, a member of the Swedish Academy, after he initially failed to acknowledge the accolade in October.

But Dylan later explained in a “personal letter” to the Academy that he was unable to attend due to “pre-existing commitments”.

It was also revealed that Dylan must give a Nobel Lecture in return for his absence if he wishes to keep the accolade.

Dylan, whose real name is Robert Allen Zimmerman, has released 37 studio albums, with his self-titled debut LP arriving in 1962.

He most recently released Falling Angels in 2016, featuring 11 reworkings of Frank Sinatra songs.
