Stars of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies gathered together for a giant group photo at the world premiere of the new film at London’s Leicester Square on Monday night.

Benedict Cumberbatch – who plays Smaug in the hit film – was among those posing for photos.

The 38-year-old actor was working a blue velvet suit jacket, black trousers and shiny shoes as he walked the green carpet to the sound of screaming fans.

Cumberbatch – who presented the Lebedev Award to Sir Tom Stoppard at the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards on Sunday evening – was joined at the event by his fiancée Sophie Hunter who looked stunning in a green lace floor length dress.

Also adding a touch of glamour to the event was actress Evangeline Lilly – who plays elf Tauriel in The Battle of Five Armies. With her chic bob sleeked back she glided down the green carpet in a white Reem Acra gown with embellished corset top before briefly covering up from the cold in a black jacket as she posed for selfies with fans and signed autographs.

Orlando Bloom was looking suave in a Lanvin suit as he posed for photos with Sir Ian McKellen. The 75-year-old actor jazzed up his long grey suit jacket with a patterned scarf, while co-star Martin Freeman – who plays Bilbo Baggins in the franchise – was sporting a polka dot tie and pocket hanky.

Director Sir Peter Jackson was in attendance and addressed the crowd, saying: "We hope you enjoy this film. We make it for you, for the fans and the people who enjoy these movies so I hope you like this one."

The premiere was streamed live to more than 160 countries, and some fans – who donned Hobbit inspired clothing - had camped on the streets for five days to get a glimpse of the cast.
