A petition has been launched in an attempt to prevent Kanye West from headlining Glastonbury Festival.

The 37-year-old rapper was announced as the act to headline the Saturday night slot at the Worthy Farm event this summer, but some festival-goers have attacked the decision.

Backlash: Kanye performing on stage

A change.org petition – titled Cancel Kanye West's headline slot and get a rock band – reads: “Kanye West is an insult to music fans all over the world. We spend hundreds of pounds to attend glasto, and by doing so, expect a certain level of entertainment.

“Kanye has been very outspoken on his views on music....he should listen to his own advice and pass his headline slot on to someone deserving!

“Lets prevent this musical injustice now!”

At the time of writing more than 1000 people have signed the petition.

Festival organiser Emily Eavis took to Twitter to announce the news that the US rapper will perform.

She tweeted: "We are thrilled to let you know we have the one and only Kanye West headlining Saturday night on the Pyramid stage!"

But some festival-goers have threatened to hand back their tickets if he is not removed from the line-up.

One user on social media wrote, “Kanye West to headline at Glastonbury has to be a joke surely? Top trolling if it is,” while another tweeted: “Someone should tell Kanye that Glastonbury is a music festival and not a Kanye gig with thousands of support acts.”

Others poked fun at the Yeezus rapper’s ego tweeting: “Kanye West to headline Glastonbury on the Pyramid Stage, while his ego will perform on the Other Stage.”

West - who recently tweeted a series of nude photos of his wife Kim Kardashian alongside the comments "swish" and "I’M SO LUCKY" - follows in the footsteps of fellow hip-hop artist Jay Z. The Holy Grail singer's Saturday night slot in 2008 caused huge controversy with Noel Gallagher claiming his appearance was "wrong". It was later deemed a big success.

Foo Fighters will headline the Pyramid Stage on the Friday, making their first appearance at the Somerset festival since 1998.
