One Direction were the big winners at the American Music Awards.

The British boyband, who will be going on an extended hiatus next year, were given the highest honour for the second consecutive year on Sunday night.

Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne were all on hand to accept the prize at the star-studded ceremony in LA.

Speaking on stage, Tomlinson said: “Wow, this is absolutely incredible, to win two years in a row. It's a testament to how incredible our fans are so thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Payne added: “We can't believe we get to win awards like this. And we are obviously going on a little break now - to spend a little time with our families. Obviously we want to thank our families.”

While A-lister Jeremy Renner presented the boys with the big award, Nicki Minaj handed them their second prize for Best Duo or Group.

Styles told the crowd: “To everyone who worked with us and has supported us for the last five years, thank you all, you are brilliant to work with and we love you all. And to the fans, thank you.”

Later on in the evening, the boys were back up on stage to perform their sinlge Perfect for the crowd.

Other big winners on the night included Taylor Swift, who won the most awards of the night despite not actually being in attendance.

The Bad Blood hitmaker picked up Song of the Year for Bad Blood, Favourite Pop/Rock Album for 1989 and Favourite Adult Contemporary Artist.
