Alan Rickman changed his famously deep voice by doing helium on Jimmy Fallon's latest show.

Much to the hilarity of the audience, the Harry Potter actor, who is known for his dulcet tones, arrived with two balloons full of helium on Wednesday and proceeded to start the interview in an incredibly high-pitched voice.

The 69-year-old star, who was promoting new film A Little Chaos, started to reprimand Fallon for his recent impression-off with Benedict Cumberbatch during which the pair both did their best 'Rickmans'.

Rickman handed the host a balloon, saying: "Apparently these are the Jimmy Fallon truth-telling machines. So I just want to know what you have to say about that. Breath it in, speak the truth."

Both stars then proceeded to inhale the helium before carrying on with the interview, although Fallon couldn't resist asking Rickman to say 'Harry Potter' in the manner of Severus Snape.

Rickman's new film, which he directed and stars in, is the star's second directorial effort following on from 1997's The Winter Guest.

Co-star Kate Winslet, who first worked with the actor in 1995 when they both starred in Sense and Sensibility, admitted that she was "absolutely terrified" of him when they first met.

Speaking at the London premiere, she said: "When I first met Alan I was absolutely terrified.

"I was 19, he was Alan Rickman, and he's got that voice, and I remember meeting him in the hair and make-up trailer and thinking, 'I'm going to die. He thinks I'm rubbish. Why am I here?'."
