British star Felicity Jones joined Lena Dunham and her Girls on the red carpet in London for the premiere of the award-winning comedy’s third series.

Jones, 30, plays a new character in the show, along with fellow Brit Richard E Grant, who was also at the event.

Dunham seemed happy to have swapped New York for London, declaring “we’re so excited to be here” at the movie-style premiere, held at Cineworld Haymarket.

The 27-year-old, who writes, directs and produces Girls as well as playing the lead character, talked Twitter, friendship and sex scenes.

Later the cast, including Alison Williams, who plays Marnie Michaels, and Zosia Mamet — daughter of playwright David — who plays Shoshanna Shapiro, headed to an after-party at the Café de Paris in Piccadilly.

Missing, however, was British-born actress Jemima Kirke, who plays Jessa Johansson.

Jones, star of Chalet Girl and new Dickens drama The Invisible Woman, said only: “It was amazing, they’re all so great.”

Dunham, who referred to Jones as “my friend”, dismissed rumours that Victoria Beckham was joining the show, but added they would be “very excited” to have her. Dunham, who plays the lead role of Hannah Horvath, admitted she followed the Twitter reaction as each episode was aired. “I don’t know if it’s a good idea but I can’t stop. It’s a joy and a pain,” she said.

And she criticised those who tell her they did not like the show at first but now love it, comparing it to men who say: “You’re really pretty for a fat girl.” Last night Dunham played down suggestions of a film, saying television was the ideal format for the stories she wanted to tell.

She suggested she had already worked out how everyone died, adding: “It would be fun to do a movie when we’re 85.” Jenni Konner, executive producer, added: “I can’t imagine three years into Sex and the City they were like, let’s make a movie.”

Williams, 25, hailed Dunham as an incredibly nice and humble boss who knew everyone on set.

The third series premieres on Sky Atlantic on Monday, January 20.
